My Desktop.jpg

With Google, posting or sharing pictures on the internet has become very simple. I remember when I bought my first digital camera (Casio) back in 1995, it didn’t even come with any photo software and I had to pay extra for a copy of QVPC in order to download pictures from the digital camera to my computer.

Now with Picasa and Hello (both of them freeware from Google, at least for the time being), even though my Cannon IXUS500 does come with a full suit of photo manipulation software, I do not need to install them. (Indeed I have found it a lot easier and user friendly to use Picasa).

Posting the above picture to Blogger took me not more than one minute and there is no need for a separate web host for storing the picture. It involved a few simple steps:

  1. Download and Install Picasa first.
  2. Download and Install Hello.
  3. Use Picaso to import photos from a digital camera or use it to select any pictures already in the computer.
  4. Invoke Hello through Picaso and post to Blogger.
  5. Done. Hassle free. Cost free.

It’s great!

Ketchup

Wonder which brand it was? Unfortunately we cannot get this Godegaarden brand ketchup here. Maybe we can try ebay.

A woman in Stockholm, Sweden found an adult, medium size penis in a bottle of ketchup.

All This Time

I looked out across
The river today,
I saw a city in the fog and an old church tower
Where the seagulls play.
I saw the sad shire horses walking home
In the sodium light
I saw two priests on the ferry
October geese on a cold winter’s night

And all this time, the river flowed
Endlessly to the sea.

Two priests came round our house tonight
One young, one old, to offer prayers for the dying
To serve the final rite,
One to learn, one to teach,
Which way the cold wind blows
Fussing and flapping in priestly black
Like a murder of crows

And all this time, the river flowed
Endlessly to the sea

If I had my way I’d take a boat from the river
And I’d bury the old man,
I’d bury him at sea
Blessed are the poor, for they shall inherit the earth
Better to be poor than a fat man in the eye of a needle
And as these words were spoken I swear I hear
The old man laughing,
‘What good is a used up world, and how could it be worth having’

And all this time the river flowed
Endlessly like a silent tear

And all this time the river flowed
Father, if Jesus exists,
Then how come he never lived here.

The teacher told us, the Romans built this place
They built a wall and a temple, an edge of the empire
Garrison town,
They lived and they died, they prayed to their gods
But the stone gods did not make a sound
And their empire crumbled, ‘til all that was left
Were the stones the workmen found

And all this time the river flowed
In the falling light of a northern sun

If I had my way I’d take a boat from the river
Men go crazy in congregations
But they only get better
One by one
One by one…

Blogs vs WikiWiki

This question must have been asked many times before. There is only one difference - whether we intend to do this Creative Process on our own or, collectively.

I decided to put up an OpenWiki online after playing under my IIS for a couple of days. I am not sure if OoooWiki will ever takes off but it has no doubt given me an opportunity to learn some SQL and server setup. My present host is using Apache and mySQL but Openwiki definitely needs Microsoft (the choice of database, however, is very much up to the end user who may want MS Access, MSSQL or mySQL). I was lucky to have found an excellent trial offer by DotNetCentral a while ago (12 months free + a free domain!!! It was a great give-away. I was probably the last one to sign up as the offer was closed the next day I revisited the site.)

The major advantages of WikiWiki (as compared to MoveableType, WordPress or other blogging software) are its ability to provide an open and casual environment for online collaboration and its relatively ease of use - all it takes is to learn some of its ‘Formatting Rules’ and it will create new pages, tables, links, categories on the fly.

The major drawback is its inability to fend off spams. All the WikiEngines I have seen will likely require a considerable effort from the administrator to do a regular and frequent clean up.

When 99% if your POP3 emails are spams and you cannot really exercise any control, you find an alternative like gmail. The days of POP3 are numbered if there is no major revamp to enable fighting spams more effectively. WikiWiki’s has even fewer options in this regard because if its free editing feature is turned off or limited to registered readers, it effectively becomes a team blog. WikiWiki may likely prevail in a closed environment; say within a certain department within a company. As regards the idea of public Wiki, I am not particularly optimistic.

Wiki

The highly popular Wikipedia has finally convinced me to take a look at what exactly this WikiWiki is.

As usual, there are two main branches of Wiki engines - open source or M$ based making up a long list of WikiEngines from which one may choose to experience this innovative collaborative tool. A number of them are simple one-file installations on IIS or Apache. There is also a free trial server available - SeedWiki is particularly tailored for Wikiwiki. And of course, one may also Wiki MT or Tyepad.

I managed to test several installations yesterday and today first on my pc and then on some free hosting servers:

As to the MediaWiki - the engine behind Wikipedia, I will probably leave it until I have got my Mandrakelinux sorted out. MediaWiki is developed primarily under the LAMP environment. Running an installation under IIS can be tricky.

Bush in Ireland

Bush gave an extremely entertaining interview by RTE. Here is the official transcript which should give you the flavor. But you have to listen to it in order to fully appreciate how hilarious it actually was.

COLEMAN: Why is it that others don’t understand what you’re about?

THE PRESIDENT: I don’t know. History will judge what I’m about. But I’m the kind of person, I don’t really try to chase popular polls, or popularity polls. My job is to do my job and make the decisions that I think are important for our country and for the world. And I argue strongly that the world is better off because of the decisions I have made along with others. America is not in this alone. One of our greatest allies in the world is your neighbor, Great Britain. Tony Blair has been a strong advocate for not only battling terrorists, but promoting freedom, for which I am grateful. Let me say one other thing about America that your viewers must know is that not only are we working hard to promote security and peace, we’re also working to eradicate famine and disease. There is no more generous country on the face of the earth than the United States of America, when it comes to fighting HIV/AIDS. As a matter of fact, it was my initiative?

COLEMAN: Indeed, that’s understood?

THE PRESIDENT:my initiative, that asked Congress to spend $15 billion over five years to battle this pandemic. And we’re following through on it. And no other country in the world feeds more of the hungry than the United States. We’re a compassionate nation.
